These two sit at opposite ends of the most important decision in this category: whether anything joins your meeting. Granola runs on your Mac or Windows machine and records the audio already playing there. Fireflies.ai sends a recorder into the call, where everyone can see it. Almost every other difference follows from that one.
How they capture the meeting
Granola requires you to press start. The vendor states plainly that it will not auto-join or auto-record anything, and that no bot is added to your video call. That costs you the meetings you forget about and buys you a tool that never shows up in someone else's participant list — which matters in client work, in interviews, and anywhere a visible recorder changes how people speak.
Fireflies.ai takes the opposite position and executes it well. It can be invited to a single meeting or set to join everything on your calendar, so nothing depends on you remembering. If your problem is that you already fail to take notes, an assistant that turns up on its own is solving the actual problem.
Where they differ on price and reach
The free plans are not comparable in the way the headline suggests. Fireflies.ai gives away unlimited transcription, unlimited summaries, live notes, meeting search and API access, capped by four hundred minutes of recording storage for the whole team. Granola's free plan limits you to the last thirty days of note history but includes custom note templates and chat across past meetings.
Language coverage favours Fireflies.ai, which publishes a list running past a hundred. Granola transcribes ten languages on desktop and seventeen on mobile, and the desktop figure is the one that matters because the desktop app is the product.
Which should you choose?
Choose Fireflies.ai if meetings happen without you preparing for them, or if you need broad language coverage and an API without paying. Choose Granola if you take your own notes anyway, work with people who would notice a recorder joining, or want the summary built partly from what you thought was important. Neither is a compromise version of the other.
